The brand is synonymous with innovation and superior sound quality, tracing its roots back to 1988 when Bent Holter, a student at the Technical University in Trondheim (NTNU), embarked on a mission to eliminate distortion from traditional hi-fi systems. Holter’s refusal to accept that amplifiers should reproduce signals with unwanted distortion led him to challenge conventional designs, resulting in the development of the revolutionary SoundEngine Technology. This innovative approach addressed distortion without compromising other critical parameters, such as damping factor.
Holter’s journey was fueled by his passion for music, notably during his time with The Hegel Band, where he suggested building custom amplifiers for their concerts. With financial support from Telenor, a telecommunications giant, Holter’s ideas took shape, leading to the founding of Hegel Music Systems. The early 90s marked a period of rapid growth for the brand, with the launch of their first DAC in 1994 and a CD player in 1996. During the financial crisis, Hegel boldly expanded by hiring new engineers, resulting in the creation of advanced D/A converters. Today, Hegel is a respected name in the Hi-Fi market, offering a range of integrated, pre, and power amplifiers, CD players, and state-of-the-art D/A converters. With six proprietary technical solutions and a global presence in 63 countries, Hegel continues to set the standard for excellence in the industry.
